{"id":481,"date":"2018-01-05T14:52:13","date_gmt":"2018-01-05T12:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.wias-berlin.de\/wias-library\/?p=481"},"modified":"2018-01-05T14:53:03","modified_gmt":"2018-01-05T12:53:03","slug":"what-is-open-access-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wias-berlin.de\/wias-open-access\/2018\/01\/05\/what-is-open-access-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Open Access?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>What is Open Access?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Unrestricted online access to peer-reviewed scholarly research<\/li>\n<li>Free of charge<\/li>\n<li>Free of most restrictions on use (though attribution is still a must)<\/li>\n<li>Defined by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.earlham.edu\/~peters\/fos\/bethesda.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bethesda<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/openaccess.mpg.de\/Berlin-Declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Budapest<\/a>\u00a0statements on open access publishing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What are the Benefits?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Increases impact &#8211; studies have found that OA research has higher citation rates<\/li>\n<li>Increases the amount of accessible research &#8211; no more being locked out by paywalls<\/li>\n<li>Stimulates collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Unrestricted access to research, regardless of economic status or institutional affiliation<\/li>\n<li>Freedom to use and re-purpose research materials in new and interesting ways<\/li>\n<li>Enables access to the research that their taxes fund and encourages lifelong learning<\/li>\n<li>Allows independent researchers to access research<\/li>\n<li>Gives businesses and other organisations access to research and encourages innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>How do you make your work openly accessible?<\/h4>\n<p>There are two routes to open access:<\/p>\n<h5>Gold Open Access<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Available immediately upon publication<\/li>\n<li>Available at the source of publication (usually the journal website)<\/li>\n<li>No charge at point of access for users<\/li>\n<li>Typically paid for with APCs (article processing charges) though there are other business models<\/li>\n<li>Typically made available under a Creative Commons licence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Green Open Access (or self-archiving)<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Subject to journal enforced embargo periods<\/li>\n<li>Available from a secondary source, such as a subject or institutional repository<\/li>\n<li>Author accepted manuscript rather than formatted publisher version deposited by authors themselves<\/li>\n<li>Check\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sherpa.ac.uk\/romeo\/index.php\">SHERPA\/RoMEO<\/a>\u00a0for your journal&#8217;s Green OA policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Article Processing Charges<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Fees charged to authors by journals to recover the costs of publication<\/li>\n<li>Average price around \u20ac1.200 but can vary between \u20ac0 and \u20ac4.000+<\/li>\n<li>Fees charged by hybrid journals tend to cost more than those charged by pure open access journals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Pure or Hybrid?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Pure open access journals contain only work made openly accessible<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid journals contain a mix of both open access and subscription based content<\/li>\n<li>Some of these journals have been accused of &#8220;double dipping&#8221; as they are receiving income from both APCs and journal subscriptions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Too much Text?<\/h4>\n<p>Watch a short video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Go Open Access - I.
